Participatory Budgeting in the Central Providence Opportunities Health Equity Zone
What is Participatory Budgeting? It is a democratic process in which community members directly decide how to spend part of a public budget. It’s a tool to empower everyone to make decisions about how funds should be spent in our communities.
Participatory Budgeting involves a series of steps: 1) Community members brainstorm and submit ideas; 2) A smaller group of community members develop ideas into project proposals; 3) Project proposals are voted on by the whole community; 4) Projects selected get carried out in the community

Residents of 02908 and 02909 are in control of how to improve health and well-being in our communities! Through this process, we will directly decide on how to spend $1,000,000 to improve the conditions that help us stay or become healthy. We will do this by sharing ideas, developing projects, and voting on what to fund. This process is called Participatory Budgeting. To learn more about Participatory Budgeting click here.
We know that there is a lot that goes into having healthy communities. Research tells us that healthy communities have adequate transportation; employment opportunities; clean, safe, and affordable housing; parks and open space; access to fresh, healthy food and clean water; a high-quality education system; and safe streets.
